Writing Contest: For ALL students in Grades 5, 6, 7, & 8
Visual Arts Contest: For ALL students in Grades 9, 10, 11, & 12
Reflect on this quote: “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
Guidelines for Entries
Writing Category
Students may submit any form of writing, such as essay or short stories of no more than 500 words, or full-page poems.
Visual Arts Category
Students may submit any form of art- such as drawings, paintings, posters, videos, slide presentation, photography, graphics, sculpture, mosaic, or single/multi-panel illustrations.
Each entry will be judged on creativity, presentation, and how well the student communicates their understanding and interpretation of the comments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as related to them and the larger community today.
Awards will be presented at the 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration

Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards
$100.00 and the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth plaque will be awarded to the 1st place winning student (Writing Contest)
$50.00 and a Lionel Washington Johnson Youth
Award certificate will be awarded to the 2nd place winning student (Writing Contest)
$100.00 and the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth plaque will be awarded to the 1st place winning student (Visual Arts Contest)
$50.00 and a Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Award certificate will be awarded to the 2nd place winning student (Visual Arts Contest)
All entries become the property of the MLK Jr. Coalition until they are collected at the end of the Celebration.
