Denominational Statements on Conversion (Reparative) Therapy

Currently the New Hampshire legislature is deliberating on HB587, which would ban such therapies in this state. The member denominations below have stated their support of this kind of ban:

The Episcopal Church “supports legislation banning state-licensed therapists and other service providers from engaging in discredited and dangerous practices that try to change a person’s sexual orientation or force them to deny their gender identity.” (Source: General Convention 2015 resolution D028)

The Presbyterian Church (USA) “express[es] its disapproval of sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts, sometimes called “conversion” or “reparative therapy” and further “direct[s] the Stated Clerk and the Presbyterian Mission Agency to support national, federal, state, and local legislation to prohibit licensed mental health practitioners from subjecting minors to “conversion therapy” practices that attempt to change their sexual orientation or gender identity” (Source: General Assembly 2016 11-23).
